Rotary Vocational Service of Excellence Recipient 2018

Rotary's Vocational Service Leadership Award recognizes Rotarians who have made significant impact in advancing vocational service. Ray Blanco is a science teacher at Hughes Middle School. He is a dedicated teacher who spends hours outside of the school day for the students on Hughes Middle School campus. He started an engineering club in his spare time during the 2016-2017 school year. His engineering club has transitioned from a club to an actual class the middle offers toward curriculum. He has also initiated a robotics club as well as the 1080 car racing program at Hughes Middle School. These competition-oriented programs teach advanced career-oriented skills like teamwork, coding, engineering, and give deeper understanding of many academic concepts like scale and force and motion. He is in the process of expanding Hughes Middle School programs to include the creation and flying of airplanes and drones. In one a span of one year, Ray Blanco has taken a club and turned it into an engineering course and two specialty course which serve over 70 students. We are honored to hear from Ray Blanco. |

New Burleson Works Initiative

Alex is the Economic Development Manager for the City of Burleson. The Office of Economic Development with the City of Burleson is a department that supports local Burleson's business locations or expansion projects with central points of contact. It is their mission to create and foster opportunities for the expansion and diversification of the local economy. The department provides customized incentive packages, maps and demographics of the City of Burleson, and site selection support for business seeking to prosper in Burleson's economy. Some key projects the department is currently working on are High Point Business Park, Hotel /Conference Center, Redevelopment of Old Town Burleson, and Transit-Oriented Development District. His presentation will discuss current projects the city is developing such as the Wagner-Smith Equipment manufacturing company that will be doubling the size of High Point Business Park's current operations, and Stuart Industries organization. |

Judy Smith is a Donor Recruitment Consultant with Carter BloodCare. She has been with Carter BloodCare since 1987. After years as their Donor Recruitment Operation's Manager she chose.to back out into the field in order to work more closely with the real heroes, the blood donors. Judy will be presenting on Carter BloodCare and how you can get involved. The organization was chartered back in 1951, and over the years the changed the name but they have not changed their core values that make the organization what it is. Nancy Holland is a part of External Affairs at College Hill Cleburne. She is the Director of Community Relations, is on the Board of The Burleson Area Chamber of Commerce and a great community leader in Johnson County. Hill College's mission is to provide high quality comprehensive educational programs and services. The college enhances the educational, cultural, and economic development of it's service are and assists both individuals and the community to prepare for a ore productive life. Hill College has campuses all over Johnson Hill county in locations such as Burleson, Meridian, Hillsboro, and Cleburne. Nancy's role is to keep the community, students and future students aware of all the great programs Hill College has to offer. She will be providing some great information on what Hill College is doing, the great programs the college has to offer, and about upcoming events the campuses are hosting. The 4 Way Test Speech Contest

We will be hearing presentations about our 4 Way Test from five great students that attend Burleson ISD. This contest is hosted by every Rotarian club around the world. This contest is open to the public and private schools or home schools in our community. Each student is given five minutes to speak about “What the 4-Way Test Means to Me.” The contest demonstrates Rotaries support for community and youth values, and contestants who participate may qualify for other events or scholarships with Rotary. The best thing about the contest is that it gives students the opportunity to create a presentation and deliver it before professionals. It also gives the students an opportunity to meet socially with a diverse group of field experts right here in the Burleson area. |

Burleson ISD Innovations

Leslie is the current Chief Academic Innovation Officer for Burleson ISD School District. She has been there since 2014. She is responsible for the development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of innovative education, curriculum, projects and programs for the District. She manages the Innovation Team consisting of executive directors, and instructional coaches. Finally, she has served as an instructional leader for the District, providing strategic support for the curriculum, instruction, assessment, and school choice improvement initiatives, and identifies grant and scholarship funding to support the same. She collaborates with the campus staff and administration on multiple matters and BAM is so proud to call her an active and integral part of our club. She will be sharing with the club what BISD is up to and what great things they are using to educate the youth of our community. |

She will be sharing some updates on Next Step Women’s Center as well as her role in the organization.
